NURS 513 Advanced registered nursing graduates are entering the profession at dynamic time when roles and scope of practice are shifting based on developments in legislation and policy in response to the evolving needs of the health care system. Professional nursing organizations play an important role in making sure the perspectives of advanced registered nurses are heard, and in supporting nurse specialties in their efforts to expand their scope of practice and their full participation throughout the health care system. For this assignment, you will conduct research on the current scope of practice for your specialty and efforts that are being made to expand that scope and the role of the advanced registered nurse in positively influencing the health care system. Write a 1,250-1,500 word paper that includes the following: A discussion of the scope of your future role as an advanced registered nurse, including any regulatory, certification, or accreditation agencies that define that scope. A discussion of three professional nursing organizations that you think are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing. Of these organizations, evaluate the one that you would most like to join. How do its goals and mission fit in with your worldview and philosophy of care? How might membership in this organization improve your practice? A discussion of a controversial or evolving issue that is most likely to affect your scope of practice or role in the next few years. How do you think this issue could influence the profession and other stakeholders and why does it matter to the advanced registered nurse? You are required to cite five to 10 sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content. Complete the “APA Writing Checklist” to ensure that your paper adheres to APA style and formatting criteria and general guidelines for academic writing. NURS 513 Introduction

Health care is in the midst of major transformation, stimulated by the present economic challenges facing the country, the shifting demographics of populations, and the increasing number of individuals living with chronic illnesses. This dynamic and unpredictable environment calls for healthcare professionals to demonstrate effective leadership. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the scope of my future role as a nurse leader working at an advanced level and the role of professional nursing organizations in influencing advanced nursing.

My future role as a nurse leader will include overseeing a team of nurses as they provide care, directing patient care initiatives, and making decisions related to patient care.  A nurse leader has advanced clinical knowledge and focuses on improving patient outcomes.  According to Gillespie (20919), an effective nurse leader has competency in clinical care and evidence-based practice and also has a deep understanding of inter-professional teamwork.  They are obligated to assure quality patient care.

According to Yoost and Crawford (2019), the CNL supervises patient care or provides direct patient care utilizing EBP, updates care plans, and evaluates patient outcomes. Cherry and Jacob(2016) emphasize that a CNL oversees the coordination of care of a distinct group of patients, evaluates patient outcomes, and has the authority to make decisions to change plans when necessary. The CNL takes an active role in the provision of direct patient care in complex situations, acts as a lateral integrator who offers centralized care coordination for patients, and puts EBP to practice to ensure that patients benefit from the latest innovations

The CNL model was developed to improve patient care quality across the continuum and as a scheme of engaging highly skilled clinicians in quality improvement and outcome-based practice. Murray (2017) indicates that the responsibilities of the CNL include delegating and overseeing the care that the interprofessional team provides. The CNL assumes liability for patient outcomes by assimilating and applying evidence-based information in the design, implementation, and evaluation of care delivery models and patient care processes. As explained by Roussel and Thomas (2016), since CNLs have advanced knowledge in change leadership strategies and quality improve and they deliver care, they are in a unique position to evaluate the quality of care and guide its improvements.

CNL is certified by the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC), which is an independent arm of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).  CNC acknowledges nurses who have demonstrated professional knowledge and standards through CNL certification. Certification aims to create a distinctive credential for post master’s and Master’s CNL programs.  According to Roussel and Thomas (2016), the ANCC posits that CNL education offers the graduate a set of skills essential to take on horizontal leadership within the healthcare team. As a clinical leader within a horizontal organization, the CNL has the responsibility and opportunity to bring individuals together, provide them a voice and create a safe environment for communication and feedback. 

Three professional nursing organizations that are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing

Professional nursing organizations are a scheme through which the profession of nursing can in represent and safeguard nurses’ interests, influence policy, offers nurse with opportunities for continuing education and advocate for quality care for patients(Roux& Halstead, 2017). American Nurses Association(ANA),  National Student Nurses Association(NSNA), and Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) are professional nursing organizations that are most influential in advancing the scope and influencing advanced nursing.  

ANA is the largest association of registered nurses in the United States and is at the front line of improving health care quality for all.  According to Vana and Tazbir (2021), ANA represents nurses in all worksites, all levels of nursing education, and all specialties. ANA has several goals, but the most important one is to assure quality and safe care for patients. To accomplish its goal of patient safety, ANA develops and publicizes documents such as code of ethics for nurses and nursing’s social policy statement. These documents define contract of nurses with society and the obligation of each nurse to behave ethically. ANA also advocates for health care consumers by pushing for evidence-based patient outcome data and supporting nursing credentialing and certification.

STTI is a nonprofit global organization based in the United States. According to Finkelman (2017), the mission of STTI is to offer leadership along with scholarship in practice, research, and education to improve the health of all people. Schools of nursing might form STTI association chapters. These chapters are where the majority of the work of the organization occurs.

NSNA is a not-for-profit organization whose aim is to promote the professional development of nursing students. It is a national organization with chapters in nursing schools. Being a member of the NSNA is an excellent way of getting involved and starting to develop skills required for the future such as learning more about leadership.  Finkelman (2017) indicates that NSNA affords students opportunities to learn about specialty groups, graduate education, and nursing careers. Active participation in a NSNA chapter of your school offers nurses opportunities of developing leadership competencies.

 I would like to join ANA because its mission and goals align with my philosophy and worldview of care. The mission of ANA is to advance the profession of nursing to improve the health of all. My philosophy is that nurses have an obligation to society to offer patient-centered, holistic, and safe care. I believe that patients are individuals that need and deserve individualized care and attention.

Joining ANA can assist me to stay informed about issues affecting the nursing role and my practice area.  Membership in the professional organization can also enable me to develop leadership skills and skills in collaboration, enable me to network with other nurses, and possibly lead to career progression. According to Black (2019), nurses join organizations to pursue certification and education opportunities, network with colleagues, develop leadership skills, influence health policy, stay up to date on professional issues, and collectively work for job security.

An evolving issue that is most likely to affect my role in the next few years

 Shortage of the nursing staff is an evolving issue most likely to affect my role as a nurse leader in the next few years. Significant nursing staffing shortages are expected to get worse in within the coming decade as more baby boomer nurse prepares to retire. These factors, together with the greatly competitive nursing recruitment environment, call for nurse leaders to approach practice leadership than ever before. Huber and Joseph (2021) indicate that nursing is dynamic and the profession continues evolving to meet the needs of the public by caring for people and maintaining wellbeing and health.  Nurse leaders have to be transformational and effectively manage various nursing roles in a manner that empowers innovation, promotes engagement,   builds long-term relationships, and supports the development and growth of nurses. 

Nursing staff deficits could endanger the quality of care, compromise patient safety and undermine the nursing profession and the whole health care industry.  Stakeholders, including nurse educators, researchers, leaders,  administrators,  accrediting agencies, professional associations, and legislative are responsible for ensuring harm to patients does not occur by finding ways of alleviating the nursing shortage. Nurse leaders and other stakeholders need to act as change agents to approach practice in an innovative way that will educate, recruit, retain, and develop the nurses of tomorrow via role management.  Huber and Joseph (2021) assert that with the imminent mass departure of the baby boomer population from the healthcare workforce, leaders should start preparing tomorrow’s nurse leaders. The shortage of nurses matters to the advanced registered nurse because the shortage of nurses will put more pressure on the current workforce and lead to burnout and cause intent of nurses to leave the profession


Nurse leaders play a major role in the provision of safe and quality patient care within the dynamic and unpredictable health care environment. An effective nurse leader has competency in clinical care and evidence-based practice. The clinical nurse CNL supervises patient care or provides direct patient care utilizing EBP, updates care plans, and evaluates patient outcomes. Professional nursing organizations influence advanced nursing by offering nurses opportunities for certification, education, and networking and influencing health policy and keeping them updated on professional.
